Handball
Handball (also known as team handball or European handball) is a team sport in which two teams of seven players each (six out-court players and a goalkeeper) pass a ball using their hands with the aim of throwing it into the goal of the other team.
A standard match consists of two periods of 30 minutes but differs at different ages groups, and the team that scores more goals than the other team wins. The game of handball was created at the end of the 19th century in Denmark.
Modern handball is played on a court of 40 by 20 metres (131 by 66 ft). The goals are surrounded by a 6-metre (20 ft) zone where only the defending goalkeeper is allowed; goals must be scored by throwing the ball from outside the zone or while "diving" into it. The sport is usually played indoors, but outdoor variants exist such as beach handball. The game is fast-paced and high-scoring where teams typically score between 20 and 35 goals each. Body contact is permitted for the defenders trying to stop the attackers from approaching the goal. No protective equipment is mandated (glasses are not permitted while playing and appropriate goggles must be worn), but players may wear soft protective bands, pads and mouth guards.
Our National Governing Body is England Handball Association (EHA) where further information can be found on this fantastic sport and how they are developing it across the country.
Handball is the quickest growing Olympic sport in the UK, coming from its strong European roots. Chichester Vulcans Handball club was a long time coming and a vision of our Club’s Chairman since 2014, where the club finally started in mid-2018. Chichester Vulcans HC is a not-for-profit community sports club, meaning all profits stay within the club and will be used for the good of the club and its members.
The club has a number of members that give extra -time in further supporting the club through a committee role, enabling the smooth running and steady growth and development across all areas such as; the introduction of new teams and competition entry, social media postings and adverts, and the organising of social & fundraising events to name but a few.
Our club name, Vulcan, derived from the name given for the Roman ‘God of Fire’, influenced by the fantastic historic roman city of Chichester where the club began. This has given a great influence into our colour scheme and design throughout the club's kit and graphics.
Chichester Vulcans has evolved a lot since the first training session back in May 2018, and now boasts a successful men’s team, a steadily growing but successful woman’s team, and most recently the development and introduction to our newly formed Junior Vulcans training. The club has highly qualified and experienced coaches, with a number also in development. The club boasts a number of inspiring adult players, both male and female, some of whom have represented their respective countries playing handball, while also we welcome complete beginners to the sport offering a great diverse mix of individuals and experience.
Our Logo was a modification of a design drawn by a local primary school student during a competition run with local primary schools (seen on the left). This was a fantastic way of engaging our club with our local community and introducing handball to many who had not heard of the sport before.
Design from a local primary school student massively influences our club logo!

I have no previous experience in handball, I was inspired to get involved by my brother and club Chairman, James.

What I love about the club is it's community feel and what I love about the sport is the fast-paced nature of the game.

We welcome a diverse range of backgrounds from a range of nationalities where the club proudly boasts members from all around the world, from South America, Europe, Asia, to of-course - Great Britain, offering impressive diversity for a British Amateur Community Sports Club. With handball growing year on year in the UK, there are a number of leagues, cups, tournaments, and friendlies available in our local area, whether organised by our NGB EHA or by ourselves and the clubs around us. In 2019 we entered the EHA Regional League South with both our men and ladies teams, seeing great success and performances for our first year of competition. We boast a range of local clubs/competitors from areas of Brighton, Crawley, Kent, Reading, Guildford, London, to name a few. England handball also run leagues and tournaments for under 14’s & 16’s which work in conjunction with those offered at schools to under 13 & 15 respectively.
Chichester Vulcans HC stands for and upholds a number of important club values; Teamwork, performance, enjoyment, hard work, commitment, equality, integrity, opportunity, support and fun. These values are an expectation for every member, parent, and volunteer to uphold and respect.
With these key values within the club, we have created a community sports club that is extremely friendly, welcoming and enjoyable to be in and around. We have had many comments around the family nature of the club and how each member feels valued and catered for, however, there is still the underline instinct to win and perform highly for the team.
We have an exciting dedicated Club Committee who have been voted in to work hard to push forward the club and to enable as many opportunities for its members as possible.
One role which is important for you to be aware of is our club welfare officer, James Chadburn, who is fully qualified and is your go-to contact regarding all safeguarding and welfare questions and enquiries.
